PROCLAMATION |
| |
| WHEREAS, an estimated
345,000 million adults over the age of 25 in North Carolina have been
diagnosed with COPD by a physician; and |
| |
| WHEREAS, an estimated
680,000 adults in North Carolina have symptoms of impaired lung
function, indicating that COPD is under-diagnosed; and |
| |
| WHEREAS, an estimated
3,400 adults died of COPD in North Carolina in 2000, making COPD the
fourth leading cause of death, and, unless the rate of increase is
slowed, possibly the third leading cause by 2020; and |
| |
| WHEREAS, COPD
accounted for about 228,000 office visits to doctors, 42,000 Emergency
Department visits, and 20,700 hospitalizations of adults in North
Carolina; and
|
| |
| WHEREAS, COPD cost
the North Carolina economy about $900 million in 2000; and
|
| |
| WHEREAS,
establishment of a Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Month could
increase public awareness and result in earlier diagnosis, less
severity, and a significant reduction in the prevalence and costs of
COPD; |
| |
| NOW, THEREFORE, I,
MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby
proclaim November 2005 as “CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE
AWARENESS MONTH” in North Carolina.
